My approach to treating patients

Welcome to the web site of Dr. Kevin Tetsworth, staff surgeon at the Royal Brisbane Hospital, and now the CONROD Professor of Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery. As an experienced physician with more than 25 years of specialization and training in orthopaedics, I take an individualised approach to caring for my patients. This web site was developed to familiarize you with my orthopaedic practice, our dedicated staff, and the many quality services we provide. Whether you're seeking orthopaedic care or would just like to expand your knowledge, I hope this site helps you become informed and more confident about the variety of orthopaedic treatments available.

I've gained an immeasurable amount of experience in many aspects of general orthopaedics, but now focus on the management of complex skeletal trauma as well as difficult revision total joint reconstruction. My specialty interests include staged correction of failed infected total joint replacement, deformity correction, limb lengthening, and post-traumatic limb salvage. My reputation is based on my success when treating some of the most difficult and complicated cases, often those that have failed to respond after prior procedures. I am well prepared for this challenging work, and first completed two additional Fellowship programs after my residency to complement my broad experience in general orthopaedics. I spent one year studying Ilizarov reconstructive surgery with Dror Paley in Baltimore, Maryland, and I was then George Cierny's fellow in Atlanta, Georgia studying the management of osteomyelitis and musculoskeletal infection. After initially practicing at the University of Maryland (Baltimore) for almost 10 years, I relocated to Australia in 2000 and here I have been dedicated exclusively to work in the public hospital system.

It is important for my patients to understand the diagnostic process, their own unique problems, their treatment choices, and their potential for recovery. Patients can participate in the process, and help inform me throughout as their diagnosis and treatment progresses.

In my opinion, patients do best when they understand their condition: how it developed and how various treatment approaches can improve or correct the problem. When we consider treatment alternatives, I present a realistic outlook on the results we can achieve. I'll also be frank about any risks that might be involved. If a non-surgical option is available, I'll explain that avenue as well.
