My approach to treating patients

As a fellowship-trained spine surgeon with more than two decades of experience treating the most complex and challenging spinal cases from around the world, I now provide surgical care to adult and adolescent patients with all manner of neck and back pain problems. Through research, careful study, and personal experience, I have become a recognized expert in treatment of diseases of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spinal column, providing innovative and minimally invasive solutions to many patients who need spine surgery.

SPECIAL INTERESTS: I have used minimally invasive surgery (MIS) techniques to care for patients suffering from back and leg pain caused by disc degeneration or disc herniation or spinal stenosis, carefully removing the bone spurs or disc protrusions causing nerve compression and pain. While I do a variety of traditional and innovative fusion and decompression procedures to treat compressed nerves or spinal cord in the neck, causing arm pain or arm and leg weakness, I also have extensive experience with motion preserving options such as disc replacement surgery.

Cutting-edge treatment for scoliosis or spinal deformity, and conditions causing spinal instability and pain, now allow patients to be up and out of bed more quickly, and with fewer complications. Spinal fusion and instrumentation, whether for wear and tear conditions, or for fracture or more serious degeneration, incorporate minimally invasive approaches for many aspects of care. Experienced in the treatment of highly complex spinal conditions including vertebral fractures and spine trauma, spinal column tumors and infections, I use a wide variety of diagnostic tools and treatment methods to properly solve problems that require major reconstructive solutions, including those that have occured due to failed back surgery.

I am well experienced in artificial disc replacement for both the lumbar spine and the cervical spine, having participated in FDA trials that have proven the utility of these devices in properly selected patients. I have also participated in clinical research demonstrating the positive results of sacroiliac fusion for selected patients with SI joint injury and pain. Years of basic science and biomechanical research have helped me, and many other surgeons, hone our treatment methods and tools to provide better treatment and fewer complications.

Always devoted to clinical care, I have also devoted years of service to education and medical research. As the Director of the Cleveland Clinic Spine Surgery Fellowship Program for over a decade, I have taught the fine points of diagnosis, surgical approach, and operative technique to both Orthopaedic and Neurosurgical spine specialists. I have written over 130 peer-reviewed papers on spinal disease and treatment, and given near 400 lectures nationally and internationally on these subjects.

But I treat patients one at a time.

My earnest effort is to try to match the best treatment to the individual patient in every case. That means that many patients will be offered non-surgical therapies and pain management options when they first visit the Surgery Clinic. Fortunately, the St Vincent Charity group is a multidisciplinary center offering non-operative back and neck care as well as expertise in pain management. We are always looking for the treatment that is safest and most reliable in relieving pain and restoring function. And if surgery is found to be the best option in your case, I will provide the very best surgical approach available for your problem.
