My approach to treating patients
I am a pediatric orthopaedist with a special interest in sports medicine and scoliosis. Although pediatric orthopaedics encompasses all aspects of musculoskeletal care from infancy to mid twenties, a concern for interventions aimed at preventing disease in this population has stimulated a life long commitment to health and fitness. Dr. Reed cares for fractures, congenital deformities, developmental defects and is interested in osteoporosis from an early intervention standpoint. Although treatment of pediatric complex deformities is exciting and rewarding, particularly in Third World Countries, these problems have no where near the impact that an under exercised or injured youth who does not return to an active lifestyle will have on future healthcare. Working as the Orthopaedic Liaison to the AAP Committee on Sports Medicine and Fitness and developing an improved System of Athletic Care in S.C.,provides an opportunity to share new information for families interested in prevention through physical activity. Scoliosis is an over diagnosed curvature of the spine when screening is improperly done. When correctly performed and appropriately referred as was begun in S.C. with School Nurses, an opportunity exists for early intervention through bracing. The Charleston Bending Brace is a night time only brace available for control of increasing scoliosis and is currently being used in our practice.
