About Dr. Bartz

Dr. Reed L. Bartz, a native Texan, specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of sports related injuries with an emphasis on injuries of the knee, and the thrower’s shoulder and elbow. He is certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.

After graduating from The St. Johns School in Houston, Texas, Dr Bartz received his B.S. in Economics with Financial Applications from Southern Methodist University in Dallas Texas. He received his MD from The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. After his Internship in General Surgery, Dr. Bartz completed his residency in Orthopedic Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. During his residency, Dr. Bartz was awarded the Paul Harrington Award for excellence in Orthopedic Research two times, the Houston Orthopedic Society Research Award, and the Herodicus Award for Excellence in Sports Medicine Research by a resident.

Dr. Bartz completed a fellowship in Sport Medicine, and Surgery of the Knee and Shoulder in Vail, Colorado at the world renowned Steadman Hawkins Clinic under the tutelage of Dr. Richard Steadman and Dr. Richard Hawkins.

After completing his fellowship, Dr Bartz served for three years as Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the University Of Colorado Health Sciences Center where he was involved in the education of the orthopedic residents and sports medicine fellows. During that time, he served as team physician for The University of Colorado and the University of Denver athletic teams. During that period, the University of Colorado football team won two Big XII North titles while the University of Denver Hockey Team won two National Championships. Dr. Bartz then spent two years in private practice in Lincoln, Nebraska where he was a team physician for the University of Nebraska Football and Baseball Teams.

Dr. Bartz feels that one of the greatest benefits of being involved with athletic teams in the Big XII Conference was getting to know Drs. Covington, Bowden, and Wolfe, and he is extremely excited and honored to have the opportunity to be able to practice medicine with them.

Dr. Bartz has authored over fifteen peer reviewed article in orthopedic and sports medicine journals on topics such as knee, shoulder, and elbow injuries, ACL injuries, throwing injuries, arthroscopy, meniscus tears and cartilage injuries. He has been published in The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, The American Journal for Sports Medicine, Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, Techniques in Knee Surgery, Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy Review, and Foot and Ankle International. He has been an invited speaker to many national forums including the AAOS and AOSSM. He is currently an editor for the sports medicine section of Orthopedics (“The Blue Journal”)

Dr Bartz is blessed with three beautiful daughters and a wonderful son. He enjoys the outdoors, golf, reading, and spending time with his children. He is a member of the Baptist Church.

Dr. Bartz returns to his home state of Texas where he specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of sports related injuries with focus on pathology of the thrower’s (overhead athlete’s) shoulder and elbow, and arthroscopy of the knee and shoulder.
