My approach to treating patients

Dr. Schmitz utilizes research-based and technology-driven techniques to care for his patients. He is well versed in both non-operative and operative treatment for a variety of orthopaedic injuries.

Dr. Schmitz cares for fractures, congenital deformities, sports injuries and has a special interest in hip deformities and injuries. Trained in pediatric orthopaedic surgery with a focus on adolescent sports medicine and hip disease, Dr. Schmitz utilizes cutting edge surgical techniques to care for his patients. Although he primarily treats children and adolescents, Dr. Schmitz is also trained in Young Adult Hip Preservation techniques.

After a distinguished collegiate and post graduate career in rugby, Dr. Schmitz is currently a team physician for the USA Rugby Men's National Team (the Eagles). He recently traveled with the team as the team doctor for the 2015 Rugby World Cup in England. He is well versed in sports medicine techniques to keep athletes of all ages active and "in the game".

Dr. Schmitz brings compassion that only a surgeon working with children on a daily basis can employ. He is dedicated to making the child in all of us feel comfortable and involved in the medical decision making process. In addition to caring for the children of active duty and retired military personnel in the Texas region, Dr. Schmitz serves as the sole pediatric orthopaedic surgeon in the US Air Force, helping consult on the care of military dependents world-wide. He also cares for the children of non-military members of San Antonio at Methodist Children's Hospital.

Dr. Schmitz has authored numerous articles in peer-reviewed medical journals and textbook chapters. He has lectured on various orthopedic topics around the United States and is helping develop the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons through residency training and education. Dr. Schmitz serves on multiple national orthopaedic committees, helping further the profession of orthopaedic surgery. He serves on committees for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA), American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), Pediatric Research in Sport Medicine (PRISM), and the Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons (SOMOS), including serving on the Board of Directors for SOMOS.

Dr. Schmitz also dedicates time to helping the less fortunate. He volunteers 1 week per year to travel to Ecuador with Project Perfect World to provide orthopaedic surgery care to the local population, while working with the local surgeons on advancing their skills and care delivered.

Dr. Schmitz was named to the San Antonio Business Journal's 40 Under 40 for 2015.

Dr. Schmitz was also elected to the inaugural class for the United States Air Force Academy Rugby Hall of Fame for his distinguished career as a rugby player in 2016!
