My approach to treating patients
I have spent the last 20 years specializing in orthopaedics. I take a highly personal and indiviudal approach to caring for each patient. When you become part of my practice you are not just a diagnosis or a disease you are an individual person who has come to me because you need help.
I practice general orthopaedics, but, I have a special interest in total joint replacement, arthroscopic surgery and trauma. I strongly believe continuing education is the key to providing excellent patient care. Since finishing my residency I've completed additional rigorous skills training programs in minimally invasive anterior hip replacements and I was the first orthopaedic surgeon to in Nevada to provide that service. I have also completed the training program for the minimally invasive Oxford unicompartmental knee replacement (www.biomet.com/patients/oxford.cfm) and I was the second surgeon in Las Vegas to practice the technique. I believe total knee replacements can sometimes be performed more accurately with the aid of a computer and have therefore taken several cadaver courses to learn the use of computer aided knee navigation). I have received additional training in arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament replacement surgery using techniques that allow patients to more quickly rehabilitate without the use of a brace (www.drstevehowell.com/pdf/Y-BMT-625R_101500.pdf). I have a special ingterest in traumatic injuries. My partner, Dr. Sanders, and I have been taking call at Nevada's only level I trauma center (University Medical Center) since 1992 (Sanders) and 1993 (me),longer than anybody else still in practice.
Some surgeons have a relationship with a particular prosthetic manufacturer. I do not. Therefore I have no obligation to any particular manufacturer and will choose whatever implant will work best for you.
My purpose is to handle each and every patient visit with care and proficiency. It is important to me that our Doctor/Patient relationship is open and honest. It is my responsibility to make sure you are well informed about your condition and the multiple choices of treament. It is my hope that this website will help accomplish that goal.
