My approach to treating patients

My approach to patient care is relatively simple. I strive to treat everyone the way I would like to be treated. My mission is to bring world class orthopaedic care home to the New River Valley. I provide compassionate care with integrity and expertise.

I am a proud Veteran of the US Navy and served in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and the Global War on Terrorism. I have been stationed at various bases around the world taking care of Marines, Sailors, and Navy SEALS. I am fortunate to have had some of the best training available to develop and expand my expertise. In addition to being Board Certified in Orthopaedic surgery, I have completed subspecialty training and am a subject matter expert in numerous areas of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine. I completed fellowships in both Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy (minimally invasive surgical techniques using a fiber-optic camera and small instruments). I have practiced as a surgeon for over 10 years in both military and civilian environments and am adept at treating a variety of injury patterns.

In addition to my military team experience I have worked extensively with athletes at the professional, collegiate, and high school levels. I have served as a team physician for the Boston Celtics and Harvard University (largest Division I athletic department in the USA) as well as numerous smaller colleges and high schools. I believe I bring an important complement to the care of athletes because I am an athlete myself. I graduated from Blacksburg High School and then played NCAA basketball for Johns Hopkins University and Roanoke College, playing in 4 NCAA tournaments and receiving Academic All- American honors.

I enjoy helping patients who are injured get back into their game. This function is important whether the goal is to get a professional basketball player back on the court, a Marine or Navy SEAL back into the fight, a college football player back on the field, or a middle aged weekend warrior back to their golf or tennis game. All athletes have a similar mentality regardless of the level at which they compete. Their aspiration is to get back into the game. When an athlete is not able to compete and participate in their chosen sport it can have a negative effect on the quality of their daily life. It is tremendously gratifying to help patients return to a high level of function after an injury.

While I have extensive experience and subspecialty training in sports medicine, joint preservation, complex reconstruction of the shoulder and knee, and general trauma experience from my military career, I also recognize my own limitations. If your condition would be better treated by another surgeon, I am happy to refer you to one of my colleagues if they would be more appropriate for your particular care. My goal is for you to get the best treatment possible for your condition.

My time is no more valuable than yours. I will do my best to be punctual, but will also make sure that you are given the time and attention that you deserve. Occasionally I run behind schedule due to unforeseen emergencies or patient issues that require more resources than allocated. Rest assured that when I see you, you will have my focus and be given the proper attention required to address your problem and questions.

I grew up in Blacksburg and am honored to have the opportunity to come home and care for our neighbors. I look forward to seeing you in my clinic and working together to find a solution to your musculoskeletal problems.

Respectfully,

Jon Maher, MD
