About Dr. Mathers

Dr. M. Jonathan Mathers has practiced orthopaedic surgery in the Atlanta area since 2004. He specializes in advanced arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder and knee. He believes in personal care and attention for each of his patients, spending as much time as necessary to educate them to make informed health care decisions.

Dr. Mathers graduated cum laude from Duke University in 1994 with a B.S. in biomedical engineering. During his undergraduate study, he was awarded a National Science Foundation Undergraduate Fellowship in research in the field of medical imaging. He then attended Georgetown University in Washington, DC where he received his M.D. degree and also worked as a fellow at the National Institutes of Health.

He completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center and Shriners’ Hospital in South Carolina. He continued on to a sports medicine fellowship at Baylor University School of Medicine in Houston, Texas. During the fellowship, he received advanced training in arthroscopic shoulder and knee surgery. He also gained experience in the treatment of collegiate and professional athletes as the assistant team physician for the MLB Houston Astros, NFL Houston Texans, and University of Houston Cougars. He has continued this interest as the team physician for both Georgia Perimeter College and Morehouse College. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons and is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Dr. Mathers, his wife, and three children live in Atlanta. He enjoys photography, live music, and Duke basketball.
