  • ACL Graft: Hamstring vs. Patellar Tendon?
There are several suitable graft options for ACL reconstruction. With today's availability of on line information, it often boils down to patient preference. In my experience, hamstring, patellar tendon, and cadaver grafts have all yielded comparable results, and this is consistent with many reports in the orthopedic literature. Patients should discuss the specific pros and cons of each option with their surgeon before making their final decision.

  • ACL Injury Prevention
Athletes are, unfortunately, vulnerable to ACL injuries. Programs have evolved to help reduce the risk. Incorporating prevention training should be considered for all athletes at risk, especially female athletes.

  • ACL Success
People often ask if they will ever be able to resume sports after ACL surgery. Most studies report about a 90% success rate with ACL surgery. Watch for yourself as former Glastonbury High School standout Jordan Brown (3 years after repair to his ACL, MCL, and medial mensicus) adds 6 points to the scoreboard for his Bryant University Bulldogs!

  • Choquequirao
This off-the-beaten-path destination in the Peruvian Andes is more difficult to access than the more popular Machu Picchu. It's a rigorous hike with some interesting ruins to visit and is certainly as much about the journey as it is about the destination. I was fortunate to be able to make this trip with all three of our children in 2008.

  • Deerfield Beats Choate in OT!!
In January, 2009, Captain Evan Dugdale, #22, assisted by John Rose, battled three Choate players and one Deerfield teammate before putting a wrist shot in the net for the OT win against Deerfield's arch rival in front of a jubilant home crowd!

  • La Ruta de Los Conquistadores
Check out these photos. La Ruta is billed as the "Most grueling mountain bike race on the planet." I can attest to the challenging nature of this 4-day/ 4-stage race across Costa Rica from the Pacific Ocean to the Caribbean Sea, which involves 40,000 vertical feet of climbing, 225 miles of riding in mud, gravel, heat, cold, fog, rain, and hiking through rivers and across treacherous railroad bridges. Along with my friends, Andy Caputo and Dave Cormier, I participated in 2007 with goals of being an official finisher, not getting hurt, and taking lots of pictures. Mission accomplished. In my daily professional life, I encounter many people who are crippled by arthritis and several post-traumatic conditions that do not allow them to participate in physical exercise. Those people inspire me to become involved in events such as La Ruta, quite simply, because I can.

  • Marathon Adventure in Alaska 2007
What better way to enjoy a unique sampling of Anchorage, Alaska than to participate in a marathon with your persuasive 22 year-old daughter? The Mayor's Marathon was our first "26.2" and we had a blast during the months leading up to the event, comparing notes and training tips, etc. The actual run on June 23, 2007 was a delicious icing on the cake. The event was very well-organized and featured beautiful mountainous scenery and a 10-mile segment of off-road trail running.
