- About The Ottawa Hospital
This is the main site for the Ottawa Hospital. In-patient surgery takes place at the General Campus. Out-patient surgery generally is performed at the Riverside Campus. All follow-up appointments are for the Module O Orthopaedic Clinic or Plaster Room at the General Campus. If there is a problem which arises after hours following a surgical procedure, patients must go to the General Campus Emergency Department and ask for Dr. Feibel or "Orthopaedics On-Call". - Access to Medline Plus Health Information
This is the best resource for up-to-date, reliable medical information. The National Library of Medicine, located in Bethesda, Maryland tracks hundreds of thousands of medical articles, published in thousands of medical journals. Medline Plus offers the information is an easily digested format.Always obtain medical information from a reliable source with a site which is free of advertising, does not ask for personal information from you and does not charge a fee. It is important to discuss the information freely with your doctor.

A comprehensive listing of members by state in the US and internationally. This site is particularly useful when patients plan to travel to Florida or overseas and orthopaedic care is required. Leg and arm cast protection is available though Orthomedix, Telephone 613-247-0611. The cast protection bag has a vacuum seal to keep your bandage or cast dry. The cast cover fits snugly yet comfortably offering cast protection during bathing. - Hip Resurfacing - Conserve / Conserve Plus Hip
The Conserve hip has been in use for approximately 5 years and has recently become available in Ottawa. The metal-on-metal version which consists of a metal head and metal shell is known as the Conserve Plus. Long-term results at 10 and 15 years are NOT available for this implant.The step-by-step video demonstrates the principles of the surgical reconstruction very clearly.
- Hip Resurfacing - Current Status
This COA link provides a balanced view of hip resurfacing. Hip resurfacing is an option for patients with physiologic age below 55 years and no history of inflammatory arthritis or osteoporosis. The re-operation rate for hip resurfacing is in the order of 5% at 4 years, slightly higher than for conventional total hip replacement. - Medline - Free Access
Medline is the search engine used by physicians and surgeons. The abstracts are difficult to decipher for patients and family not familiar with medical terminology. Nevertheless, if you read something which is of interst or applies to your own situation it is best to discuss this with your physician. The actual search engine is "PubMed" and appears as the default item. - Minimally Invasive (MIS) Hip Replacement Video
This is the internet webcast for live surgery carried out by Dr. William Hozack in January 2003. MIS hip surgery is available at the Ottawa Hospital Adult Reconstruction/Total Joint Unit. The procedure is appropriate for carefully selected patients. You will need the free internet version of Realplayer to view the webcast. It runs fairly slowly on a dial-up connection but the audio is quite good. Simply click on "View Procedure" which is outlined in purple to begin viewing the webcast. - Oxford Knee Live Surgery Demonstration
Live surgery available from the Canadian Orthopaedic Association website. This is a very nicely prepared series of streaming videos. The surgery that is being shown is identical to that described by the Oxford working group of surgeons. - Oxford Unicondylar Knee
The Oxford unicondylar knee represents a partial knee replacement which has excellent long-term survivorship in appropriately selected patients. The surgery also has the advantage of being performed through an incision which is approximately half the length of a total knee replacement incision. The hospitalization is only 2 days compared to 5 for a knee replacement. The polyethylene (plastic) insert is a mobile-bearing in that it is free to slide back and forth on the polished tibial base plate. - Stryker Patient Information

A step by step animated demonstration of what is done during knee replacement surgery. - Wheeless' Textbook of Orthopaedics
Dr. Wheeless placed this orthopaedic textbook on the net. It is used predominantly by orthopaedic residents to read up on topics. Some sections provide information in point form only. Other sections, such as pelvic fractures shows an actual surgical procedure from start to finish.If you can find good x-ray photographs for your particular problem, well, as the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words.
