My approach to treating patients
The purpose of my practice is to provide state-of-the-art Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine care in an efficient and compassionate fashion. I believe that new technologies combined with traditional craftsmanship are the keys to successful surgery. I am board certified in both Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine.
The focus of my practice is the diagnosis and comprehensive treatment of knee and shoulder disorders. I also provide care to my patients as a general orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine physician. Minimally invasive techniques are utilized in all the surgeries I perform. My ultimate goal is to get patients back to normal activities as quickly and painlessly as possible.
Virtually all my shoulder surgery is performed arthroscopically. Arthroscopic rotator cuff repairs are carried out with a reinforced suture technique that has three times the strength of a standard stitch. It takes a little extra time, but I believe attention to details are what craftsmanship is all about. I also believe that it leads to superior results. Shoulder instability reconstruction, impingement syndrome (a type of chronic rotator cuff tendonitis), biceps tendon problems, labral tears, and most AC joint problems are also treated arthroscopically. Shoulder replacements are performed for advanced arthritis through a minimal incision.
Arthroscopy was originally designed with knee injuries including sports related ones in mind. The most common knee problems I correct surgically are meniscus cartilage tears. These are easily treated as minor outpatient procedures. Arthroscopy has evolved to include reconstructive surgeries as well. ACL reconstructions are now common for ACL tears. I prefer double bundle allograft (donor) for ACL reconstructions, but also use hamstrings and patellar tendon grafts in certain situations. Cartilage transplants are also in my repertoire including ACI (autogenous cartilage implantation).
Knee arthritis is managed in all ages of adults. Sometimes a simple "clean out" arthroscopy is all that is needed. A realignment procedure may be suggested to extend the life of the native knee in younger individuals. Partial or "unicompartmental" knee replacements may also be an option in certain situations. Total knee replacements are recommended for patients with advanced arthritis. I perform these as computer assisted surgery and as minimally invasive procedures at Memorial Hospital's Joint Replacement Center
Technology and craftsmanship are important but not everything. Compassion is also a key ingredient to good medical care. This is often lost by the time we become surgical specialists. Patients tell me that they appreciate my bedside manner. I hope you find the same is true for you.
