Community activities

I am an orthopaedic surgeon with dual fellowship training in adult/pediatric spinal disorders and pediatric orthopaedics. My primary practice experience and research interests are in spinal disorders, pediatric orthopaedics, spinal deformity and the multiply operated spine. I would like to tell you a bit about my life.

I was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, the second of ten children, and grew up in Long Beach, California. My university studies were at Texas A&M University, where I received a B.A. degree in Chemistry with a German minor in 1982. After graduation, I worked briefly as an industrial chemist in the Los Angeles area until 1984, when I entered Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. I received my Medical Degree in 1988 and interned in the Department of General Surgery at Baylor. In part because of a younger brothers death from a cervical spinal cord injury, I spent one year as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in Biomechanics at Yale University School of Medicine studying spinal trauma biomechanics. After a second year of general surgery training at Yale, I completed four years of Orthopaedic Surgery residency in 1995.

It was a Yale that my wife and I had our first two daughters. I then completed the Chicago Spine Fellowship at the Shriners Hospital and Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois in 1996 and went to Nice and Berck sur Mer, France during the Fall of 1996 as a traveling fellow. At this point, the emphasis of my fellowship training was in adult and pediatric spinal deformity and disorders. After training, I worked full-time as an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery with a dual appointment in the Department of Neurosurgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where our third daughter was born. I practiced at the Childrens Hospital of Wisconsin and Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital from 1996 to 1999 and was board-certified in 1998. An opportunity presented in my hometown to increase my experience in pediatric orthopaedics, and I moved close to my family in California. I worked at Long Beach Memorial Hospital as an adult spine surgeon and was the director of pediatric orthopaedics at the Tichenor Lowman Center for Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery at Miller Childrens Hospital. During my time in Long Beach, I was a 2001 Scoliosis Research Society Traveling Junior Fellows to Eastern Asia. I enjoyed an interesting practice in my hometown, but this was soon to change&

At the time of the September 11, 2001 airline hijackings and attacks, I was, and still am, a United States Army Active Ready Reserve Orthopaedic Surgeon. In the face of an impending war, I left my practice in California in 2002 to move my family closer to my wifes family in Minnesota, knowing that I would almost certainly be sent to Iraq in the near future. Six months after my wife and children moved to our new home, I was called up for active duty in Iraq in February 2003. I was away for six months from my new practice in a small general orthopaedic group. During my prolonged absence, they hired another spine surgeon, so upon my return I formed my own practice in the Twin Cities and worked part-time in a small-town near my wifes family in rural Minnesota, a large urban medical center and a childrens hospital. Our fourth daughter was born during that time. Developing a solo spine and pediatric practice in the big city was tremendously difficult; in spite of my past success in California, I could not develop my pediatric practice, although my adult spine practice fared much better. I was then challenged with another military deployment overseas to Germany in 2005, and so I closed my private practice a third time.

I decided not to return to solo practice after active duty and instead performed a second fellowship in pediatric orthopaedic surgery at Los Angeles Orthopaedic Hospital and Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center to pursue my long-standing interest in complex pediatric orthopaedic problems. I then returned to Minnesota to be with my family and resume my work. When the opportunity presented in Marquette to work with Marquette Orthopaedic Associates as a spine and pediatric orthopaedic surgeon, the timing seemed right to make a new move. I was impressed with the Marquette General Hospital and the partners of Marquette Orthopaedic Associates. I look forward to living in the picturesque City of Marquette on Lake Superior, where the region has a great need for this type of subspecialty care.

Sincerely

Edward P. Southern, M.D.
