Scope of surgical practice
Mr Chris Oliver is a Specialist Consultant Trauma Orthopaedic and Hand Wrist Surgeon at the new private Shawfair Park Hospital in Edinburgh, Scotland. Trained in Orthopaedic Surgery, Trauma Surgery, Hand & Wrist Surgery in London, Yorkshire, Oswestry, Seattle, USA and Oxford. Mr Oliver has worked in Edinburgh since 1997.
Specialist interest is upper limb problems especially involving the hand, wrist and elbow. He has a special interest in Dupuytren's contracture, hand sports related injuries, scaphoid fractures, carpal tunnel syndrome, carpal instability, trigger finger, ganglions, DeQuervain's synovitis, chronic upper limb regional pain syndrome (CRPS) and complex conditions of the wrist and hand. Mr Oliver has devoted much of his non-clinical time to both surgical education and clinical research. He completed a research doctorate (DM) in pain and his thesis was published by the University of London. His academic qualifications are BSc (Hons), MB. BS, FRCS (Eng), FRCS (Tr and Orth), FRCS (Ed), FRCP (Edin), DMI RCSEd, DM. He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh. Past chairman of the Intercollegiate Committee for Basic Surgical Examinations (ICBSE which run the MRCS exam 2008-2011). Member of Council of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (2002-2012). Fellow of The British Society for Surgery of the Hand.
He has contributed to over 400 publications and presentations. He has written on hand fracture management, bionic hand technology and has contributed several chapters to a variety of postgraduate text books, written many invited articles in both the hand surgery literature and national media, published regularly in peer-reviewed speciality journals and produced educational websites. He continues to lecture regularly both in the UK and internationally and has recently quality assured examinations for Kuwait University Medical School. Mr Oliver acts as specialist medical adviser to a number of professional football clubs, the Scottish Rugby Union, Premiership Rugby Union in Scotland. He is medical officer to The England Surf Kayak Team.
Mr Oliver has been producing Medical Reports for cases of personal injury since 1995. His medicolegal practice is now almost extensively concerned with hand, wrist and elbow problems. Member of the UK Register of Expert Witnesses and refereed expert by the Law Society of Scotland. Prepares reports for the pursuer (70%), defence (25%) and medical negligence (5%). He is trained and is available for Court appearances as an Expert Witness/Single Joint Expert.
