My approach to treating patients
Welcome to the web site of Dr. Walid Azzo. Whether you're making the decision for orthopaedic care, or would just like to expand your knowledge, I hope this site helps you become informed and more confident about the incredible realm of orthopaedic treatments available.
I opened my private practice in Bluefield, WV in September of 1994. I take a highly personal approach to caring for my patients. I believe the most important aspects of providing quality care are listening to the needs of my patients, performing comprehensive diagnostic tests, communicating, educating and presenting the treatment options to the patient. My recipe for success is making sure the patient leaves my office with the feeling that I will be helping them recover from their medical problem.
I have gained an immeasurable amount of experience in many aspects of general orthopaedics, traditional and Minimally Invasive hip and knee joint replacement surgery, cartilage transplantation, shoulder, hand, foot, and trauma surgery. I have gained good results with very complex surgeries like total wrist joint replacement, finger joint replacement for arthritis and recently the Quad-sparing knee joint replacement and hip joint replacement using muscle sparine techniques. In my private practice I have performed over 11,500 general orthopedic surgeries, over 3500 joint replacement surgeries, over 820 Quad-sparing total knee replacements, and over 80 total hip replacement using the 2-incision muscle-sparing procedure.
I strongly believe in continuing medical education to be a key for providing excellent patient care. I've recently completed rigorous training programs in Minimal Invasive Surgery of the hip and knee, shoulder arthroscopy and trauma and foot and ankle surgery. I am active in state orthopedic and national orthopedic meetings to further enhance my surgical skills and clinical knowledge. I believe in meticulous surgery and in rigorous infection prevention quidlines as crucial ingredients in the recipe for successful surgical outcomes.
I believe that knowledgeable patients make the best decisions about their own treatment. That's why I explain to my patients the diagnostic process so they understand their condition: How it developed and how various treatment approaches can improve or repair the problem. Since there are no guarantees of perfect outcomes in any surgical care, I will discuss treatment options with all risks and benefits involved so a realistic outlook on the results can be achieve. If a non-surgical option is available, I'll explain that avenue in depth.
The best compliment I receive is when patients recommend me to one of their family members or friends. My patient's trust is of utmost importance to me. Any medical problem usually causes my patients concern and anxiety because they may not know what is wrong and what needs to be done in order to correct their problem. My main approach is to keep the patient well informed - through dialogue between us and through external sources of information that are available. It is my job to help the patient understand why I take, or do not take, certain actions.
When you, as a patient, come to see me as your orthopaedic surgeon, surgery may or may be not your only option. Sometimes physical rehabilitation and/or medications may be all that is necessary. If you do require surgery, I will keep you informed of why surgery is required, what will be done in the surgery, and what to expect as an eventual outcome after surgery.
