My approach to treating patients

Delivering Exceptional Orthopaedic Care in Vero Beach, FL since 1991

My focus in Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics is straightforward, consultative, and conservative. My patients embrace my thoughtful, caring, and comprehensive methods.

After more than 30 years of medical experience and specialization, both in my Vero Beach ProSports practice and as an international consultant, I strive to:

  • listen well to the needs of my patients and their families;
  • diagnose injuries thoroughly and carefully;
  • offer multiple nonsurgical and surgical treatment options;
  • communicate frequently with patients, families, and other medical specialists;
  • educate patients to prevent repeated or additional injuries;
  • understand and consider my patients’ lifestyles, health, and limitations.

I try to quickly establish a trusting, open relationship with you and your families. I want to treat you as I would my own family members. You, the patient, are always in control.

During your initial visit, you can expect to have time to explain what problem brings you to my office. I want to know the physical location of your problem and how affects you, when it began and when it occurs, what you are experiencing - pain, weakness, numbness, stiffness, etc. We then will try to deduce why it occurred - was it an injury, an overuse, a structural problem, or a training error. We can then evaluate the need, if any, for diagnostic tests. Finally, we will discuss the probable diagnoses and treatment options. I like you to leave any visit with a concrete plan for improvement and a sense of optimism about future healing and recovery.

Surgery is not usually the first option. As an orthopaedic surgeon, I do much more than surgery. When it is required, I specialize in noninvasive and minimally invasive arthroscopic treatments. These involve small incisions and faster recoveries than standard surgery. I honed these techniques during my extra training: an additional two fellowships beyond that of most orthopaedic surgeons. Knees, shoulders, hands, elbows, ankles, and hips are my favorite areas to treat.

By routinely helping athletes, I am familiar with the intricacies of most sports. I help you get back to your sport as fast as possible. I prescribe the proper knee brace for a football lineman, the appropriate shoulder strengthening program for a competitive swimmer, the right racket for tennis elbow, the correct shoe evaluation for a marathoner, and other important improvements that affect your athletic well-being.

Specializing in sports medicine doesn’t mean that I only treat athletes. I apply the techniques for treating athletic injuries to every day orthopaedic problems. I will help you achieve your best possible performance and health, be it in competitive sports, leisurely hobbies, or just daily living!

Please call my office at (772) 978-7808 to schedule your appointment. I look forward to the opportunity of meeting and working with you soon.

Yours in good health,

Peter G. Wernicki, M.D.
