My approach to treating patients

Welcome to my Website. I hope that you find it useful and informative. I completed my Orthopedic Training at the Naval Medical Center San Diego in 1994 and was on staff there until my retirement in 2003. In 1995 I took a fellowship in Adult Reconstruction at the Mayo Clinic and subsequently had the privilege of serving as Chief of the Hip and Knee Service at the Naval Medical Center. I have been a member of the Orthopedic Medical Group of San Diego since 2003.

The focus of my practice is Hip, Knee and Shoulder reconstruction for degenerative or post traumatic problems. Although this covers a broad array of interventions ranging from minimally invasive arthroscopic procedures to major limb reconstruction, many if not most patients can be managed using non surgical approaches including Physical Therapy, tailored exercise programs, orthotics and injections. My particular sub-specialty is Arthroscopic Surgery of the Hip for developmental and acquired conditions.

I strongly believe that an individualized evaluation and treatment program can result in optimal outcomes for each patient. The cornerstone of this process is clear communication between myself and my patients. This begins before the initial consultation with a detailed history and questionnaire that is used to focus the initial interview. A thorough physical examination and appropriate radiographs complete the initial evaluation. Based on the findings, a non-operative treatment plan, further imaging studies/laboratory testing or surgery may be recommended. It is my experience that patients who are most involved in each step of the evaluation and treatment process fare the best.

If surgery is recommended and agreed to by my patients, I feel that it is incumbent upon my staff and myself to ease the normal and expected anxiety all patients experience. By emphasizing clear communication regarding patient expectations, expected outcomes and possible complications we can ensure that our patients have the information they need to make truly informed decisions. For joint replacement patients, there is a required seminar through Sharp Healthcare systems but the principle educational process is through our interactions before and after surgery.

My goal is to offer each patient the best possible care using evidence based approaches and a personalized treatment plan.
