Welcome

Dr. McCarty's Practice

Based in the Twin Cities, Dr. McCarty's practice specializes in the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries to the shoulder, elbow and knee with an emphasis on complex reconstruction (e.g. shoulder replacement and reverse shoulder replacement), advanced, minimally invasive arthroscopic techniques and cartilage restoration procedures. He and his team believe in meeting patients' individual needs through comprehensive evaluation and treatment designed to help them achieve an active, pain-free lifestyle. Many musculoskeletal conditions can be treated by non-surgical techniques--surgery is only one treatment option.

While Dr. McCarty and his team welcome and routinely treat all patients with shoulder, elbow and cartilage pathology, Dr. McCarty has additional Board Certification in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine and his practice has long focused on the care of athletes. Since 2005, he has have served as one of the orthopaedic team physicians for the Minnesota Twins Major League Baseball team, and has also enjoyed team physician responsibilities for two outstanding area high schools - Minnetonka High School and Totino Grace High School. Additionally he serves as orthopaedic consultant for Macalester College (St. Paul, MN) and an area rugby club, Metropolis Rugby.

Patients often come to see Dr. McCarty when they have exhausted nonoperative treatment options, seeking information or advice on certain orthopaedic procedures related to the shoulder, elbow or cartilage. Specifically, within the shoulder, Dr. McCarty's procedural expertise encompasses complex reconstructive procedures, such as total shoulder replacement, revision total shoulder replacement, reverse shoulder replacement, arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, arthroscopic labral repair and treatment of the thrower’s shoulder. Within the elbow his expertise encompasses arthroscopic treatment of the thrower's elbow, ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction ("Tommy John" procedure), treatment of elbow fractures and a variety of other procedures. With respect to cartilage restoration procedures, it includes autologous chondrocyte implantation ("ACI" or "Carticel"), autologous and allograft osteochondral transfer, microfracture, meniscal repair and transplant and osteotomies.

Finally, in order to remain current on the newest, evidence-based treatment options, Dr. McCarty actively takes part in scientific research and presents his findings at national conferences. He also serves as an invited peer reviewer to several prominent orthopaedic scientific journals, including The American Journal of Sports Medicine, Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research and Cartilage. A complete, up - to - date listing of his publications and presentations can be found on his curriculum vitae, available on this website.
