Welcome to the web site of John S. Shields, MD
A little bit about myself...
As a member of the adult reconstruction faculty in the Department of Orthopaedics at Wake Forest Baptist Health, I specialize in hip and knee replacement surgery. Having completed my orthopaedic surgery residency at Wake Forest, I was very familiar with the state of the art facilities, cutting edge medical care, and impeccable faculty and staff that Wake Forest had to offer. Also, having grown up in Danville, VA, I was familiar with the area and interested in coming back and serving the people here. Upon completion of my Adult Reconstruction fellowship at New England Baptist Hospital in Boston, MA, I chose to return to Wake Forest Baptist Health as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics.
My staff and I provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment for hip and knee arthritis, as well as other conditions leading to knee and hip replacement or revision surgery. We believe in meeting patients' individual needs through comprehensive evaluation and treatment designed to help them achieve an active, pain-free lifestyle. I believe that knowledgeable patients make the best decisions about their own treatment. That's why I explain every step of the diagnostic process. Next, I want my patients to understand their condition: How it developed and how various treatment approaches can improve or repair the problem. When we consider treatment alternatives, I present a realistic outlook on the results we can achieve. I'll also be frank about any risks that might be involved. If a non-surgical option is available, I'll explain that avenue in depth.
Areas of clinical interest and expertise are as follows: Knee Replacement and Hip Replacement, Robotic Partial Knee Replacement, Unicompartmental (partial) Knee Replacement, Minimally Invasive Anterior Hip Replacement Surgery, Revision Knee and Revision Hip replacement, and Total Joint Replacement.
My clinic is located at CompRehab Plaza in Winston-Salem, NC. Surgeries are performed at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center (http://www.wakehealth.edu/Orthopaedic-Services/).
