My approach to treating patients

On 06/06/2013, Dr. Jian Shen performed one of the first few minimally invasive anterior cervical transcorporal microdecompression/discectomy surgeries in the US, the very first in Northeast. It preserves the native intact disc with targeted removal of offending pathology.

Dr. Shen is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who has also completed fellowship training in Orthopaedic and Neurosurgical Spine Surgery at University of California San Francisco Medical Center.

Dr. Shen is well versed in conservative (including spinal injections) and operative treatment of all spine conditions of patients of all ages, including back pain, neck pain, scoliosis, disc herniation, sciatica, spine trauma/fractures, spinal tumor, infection, and failed spine syndrome.

Minimally invasive and endoscopic spine surgery is a technique that allows the surgeon to perform an operation that normally is done via a large midline incision through a much smaller incision. This allows for significantly less tissue damage and quicker recovery. Dr. Shen utilizes a broad range of minimally invasive treatments to effectively treat all aspects of complex spinal disorders.

Dr. Shen is the only spine surgeon in the Capital Region to use a new Transforaminal Endoscopic Technique for disc herniation and spinal stenosis surgeries, which gives patients quickest recovery and smallest wound. He has performed over 300 endoscopic cases over the last year with great results. The other unique, cutting-edge spine surgeries he performs include: endoscopic cervical decompression, endoscopic decompression for lumbar spinal stenosis, endoscopic dorsal rhizotomy, transpedicular thoracic discectomy, cervical disc replacement, anterior cervical transcorporal discectomy, MIS spinal fusion with robotic spine surgery.

On September 8th, 2011, Dr. Shen completed the very first FULL ENDOSCOPIC spinal fusion surgery in the Northeast. Actually, so far in the US, there is only one report from Chicago on similar surgery, and there is only one report from Spain on similar procedure outside the US. Dr. Shen completed this surgery independent of the above mentioned two groups. This surgery is a great success, the patient's sciatica symptom was completely resolved as soon as she woke up from anesthesia, and has remained pain free since.

In addition, Dr. Shen is also very active in clinical research. He presented two papers at the III World Congress of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery and Techniques (III WCMISST), held in August 2012 in Bahia, Brazil. Mohawk Valley Orthopedics is among one of 20 spine centers in the conuntry to participate in the Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (SMISS) Patient Registry for microdiscectomy surgeries.
